about

I wrote this song for movie screenplay I'm working on. It is a period piece, intended to sound like it was written in the mid-sixties. (Reference: Bob Dylan singing "The Times They Are A-changing")

Many thanks to Alex Whitmore for his performance and patience.

lyrics

Wandering Man

Hey, Wandering Man, I’ll follow the beat of your drum
Too much sanity’s mad, but madder by far
Is to stay in one place when you could reach the stars
Wandering Man, I will come. I’ll dance to the beat of your drum.

I met him in old San Francisco. It was windy and cold by the bay
My heart it was tired and troubled when I came to the bridge that day
I went there to end all my sorrows. The water was chilly and gray
But he was there smilin’ so sweetly. All my cares faded away.

Hey, Wandering Man, I’ll follow the beat of your drum
Too much sanity’s mad, but madder by far
Is to stay in one place when you could reach the stars
Wandering Man, I will come. I’ll dance to the beat of your drum.

We wandered through forests and meadows, we sailed across oceans and seas
We sang to the moon in the nighttime. He played as we danced in the streets
He spoke about wonders and magic and showed me the way to be free
No more was my heart locked in sorrow, now that he gave me the key.

Come gather ‘round for a story of a rover from lands far away
Look for him walkin’ the back roads. He’ll show you the road to the bay
He wanders the world so freely. Come now, he calls you to roam
How can you ever be lost when the place where you stand is your home?

Hey, Wandering Man, I’ll follow the beat of your drum
Too much sanity’s mad, but madder by far
Is to stay in one place when you could reach the stars
You’re better off ragged than buried in gold
When there’s dust on your shoes you’ll never grow old
Wandering Man, I will come. I’ll dance to the beat of your drum.
